Most people would rather stay in their homes as they grow older instead of moving into a nursing facility.   Aging in place isn’t about avoiding change it is finding a community that provides facilities for seniors to gather, places to exercise, walkability, transportation, and services to make life easier for Seniors.

Communities like Key Biscayne, in Miami Florida have an excellent Senior Program Division. The Adult and Seniors Programs division in Key Biscayne provides excursions to area attractions, events, classes, seminars, and cultural activities.

Other services from the Senor Program Division are monthly visits from the Social Security Administration representative to assist residents. The Florida Department of Motor Vehicles staff is present on a bi-monthly basis. The Florida Licensing on Wheels programs provides residents with all the services provided by the DMV department without having to leave Key Biscayne.

Key Biscayne has a Senior Transportation Program that provides important service to the community’s elderly population for visits to local shops, recreational facilities, and medical appointments.

There is also free transportation within the island.  Freebee on Key Biscayne is a free on-demand ride service

It is important to find a community that is prepared to help Senior Citizens during times like the one we are going thru, during the outbreak of coronavirus disease, (COVID- 19).  Key Biscayne, together with the Key Biscayne Comunity Foundation created a force of volunteers within the community to check on Senior Citizens.  Go for them to the supermarket and do other errands that they needed during the confinement.

Accessibility and safety are important factors when considering whether you should “age in place”.   Key Biscayne was named the second safest city in Florida in 2019.

Access to nature. It is important not only for seniors but for people all ages to have access to parks, community gardens, and other green public spaces. Key Biscayne is located within two state parks. Crandon Park and Bill Bags park.  In addition, it has many parks and green spaces within the Village.
